The Updated Lady: Fall 2026 and the Return of the Well Dressed Woman

After more than thirty years in fashion, ten of them running Clé D'or Styling, I can tell you that the best-dressed women I know don't chase the runway. They read it, edit it, and make it theirs. I am here to help you with that. This fall, the runway is handing us something I've loved for a long time: ladylike dressing is back. Meet the Updated Lady.
First, a rule I give every client
It's always worth knowing what's coming next season, but don't adopt it in totality. The moment you wear every trend at once, you stop looking like yourself and start looking like a mannequin. Pick one or two ideas that suit your life and your body, and let the rest go by.

The fall 2026 pieces worth knowing
- Body-skimming knits. A fine-gauge knit dress is comfortable, chic and effortless. Wear it with tall boots, or put a jacket over it for the office.
- Softer tailoring. Jackets with sculptural shoulders and softer waistlines.
- The skirt suit. It's back, and it's more modern than the version you remember. Wear it as a set for an event, then break it apart: the jacket with jeans, the skirt with a cashmere sweater.
Update what you already own
You don't need a new closet. You need a few finishing touches, and this is where I do some of my favorite work with clients.
- Add a belt. A belt at the waist feminizes almost anything, including a blazer, a shirtdress, a long cardigan or a knit dress. It defines your shape and makes a piece look styled.
- Pin a brooch. A brooch on a lapel, a knit or a collar adds polish and personality, and it's one of the quickest ways to make an old jacket look current.
- Wear statement jewelry. A bold necklace or cuff can turn a simple outfit into a look.
- Choose large earrings. They frame the face and finish a look faster than almost anything else.
Each of these brings back the ladylike feeling that's returning this season: dressed with intention, pulled together, and a little bit of polish.
Where to invest, and where to save
This is the question I get most, so here's how I think about it.
Invest in the pieces you'll carry for years:
- A structured bag or a clutch. A well-made bag elevates everything you wear it with, and a classic shape doesn't date.
- A peep-toe mule or slide. A beautiful shoe is something you'll reach for again and again. These can be worn with your longer skirts and your jeans and pants.
Spend a little less on the following:
- The body-skimming knit dress. It's a great way to try the season's look without a big commitment. Look for good fabric and a flattering fit, and don't worry if it isn't designer.
- Accessories. This is an area where you can pick up a trendy piece, like a brooch or large '80s-inspired earrings.
The idea is simple: spend on what lasts, and save on what's more of the moment. That way you look current without the closet regret.
Feminine and feminist, both
I want to say something I feel strongly about. You can be feminine and a feminist at the same time. Wearing a belt, a brooch, a peep-toe shoe or a skirt suit doesn't make you any less serious, capable or strong. Choosing how you present yourself is a form of power, and women have spent a long time fighting for the right to make that choice ourselves.
Feminine dressing coming back is good for all of us, because it means we get to wear what makes us feel like ourselves, whether that's a sharp suit, a soft dress or both in the same week.
